Appeals to something deeply atavistic in the English psyche with its preposterously romanticised account of the colonial era, yet somewhow irresistable. Colman plays the roistering Clive with great elan, always getting the girl and single-handedly despatching dozens of shifty-looking natives. Even the notorious black hole of Calcutta comes out looking like a vicar's tea party...
