ABSTRACT Anne and Georges, retired piano teachers and old lovers in their eighties, are enjoying breakfast together the morning after a performance by one of Anne's old students when Anne falls victim to a massive stroke. When an unsuccessful operation on a blocked carotid artery leaves Anne partially paralyzed and permanently wheelchair-bound, Georges must take up a second existence as her caretaker, looking after his lifelong companion and attempting to make the best of a dire situation as he is faced with the prospect of a wife in failing health. Won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Original Screenplay.
