Unscrupulous journalist Chuck Tatum, working in exile at a provincial New Mexico newspaper, comes across a man trapped in a collapsed mine; he manipulates the situation to make the rescue take many times longer than it should have. Commercial failure for Billy Wilder but an excellent film overall. Received an Oscar nomination for Best Story and Screenplay.
