The mermaid princess Ariel, daughter of King Triton, is obsessed with humanity despite orders from her father forbidding her venturing to the surface. But she falls in love with, and saves the life of a human prince, Eric. Ariel strikes a bargain with the evil witch-octopus Ursula where she might become human, but the price may be very high indeed. Won Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, "Under the Sea"; received an additional nomination for Best Original Song "Kiss the Girl." Brought Disney animation out of its doldrums of the 1980s.
