Idle-rich scion John Gilbert joins the Army, where he is teamed up with two working-class men -- a bartender and a riveter. He falls in love with a French girl, Melisande, but then his unit is called to combat. Gilbert sees his two friends killed but is unable to exact revenge on the scared young German responsible, instead offering him a cigarette. Total budget $382,000, this film grossed $5M domestically and over $1M abroad, and cemented Gilbert's reputation.
