Marcellus Gallio is a Roman Tribune who found disfavor from Caligula and was exiled to a posting in Jerusalem. During his stay there, he is among the soldiers tasked with carrying out the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. That group of soldiers played dice to determine who would receive Christ's only remaining possession, his homespun robe. The robe is lost when a slave, Demetrius, makes off with it. Marcellus starts to have nightmares; he is told his torments will not end until the robe is recovered and destroyed. Won Oscars for Best Set Decoration and Best Costume Design; received additional nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Cinematography.
