Two mountain climbers embark on an ill-fated ascent of Peru's Siula Grande.

ABSTRACT
Intrepid mountain climbers Joe and Simon attempt to scale Peru's daunting Siula Grande in 1985, a feat never before accomplished by humans. Troubles owing to undesirable weather and logistical issues inhibit the climbers' journey, intended to span several days; ultimately, an incident involving a poorly-placed rope sees Joe dangling past an overhang, with no hope of climbing back to Simon. Simon cuts the rope, sending Joe to his likely death in a crevasse. Against all odds, Joe survives and makes it down on his own, an unthinkable story chronicled in Touching the Void.
