Magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bauby struggles to live with near-total paralysis following a massive stroke.

ABSTRACT
Well-regarded Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby wakes from a three-week coma in a French hospital, unaware of his surroundings and present circumstances. An attending neurologist informs Jean-Dominique of his diagnosis of locked-in syndrome, a rare consequence of a massive stroke in which a patient remains "normal" in a mental sense despite near-total paralysis. Limited only to movement in his left eye, Jean-Dominique develops a unique system of communication with his speech therapist, ultimately relating events in his storied existence leading up to his stroke to be used as the basis for his memoir.
