Outsider romantic tragedy by auteur Tommy Wiseau, who directs and stars. Cast with theatrical understudies and performed more like a bad play than a bad film, adding to the charm of the melodrama. Content is suspiciously banal at first -- three softcore "love-making" scenes in the first half hour alone. But pervasive cloying soundtrack and constant voiceover abuse mask strange foley (mouth noises, footsteps on gravel) orienting the viewer toward many knowing goofs and continuity errors. Attracted cult fascination, costume-and-toast midnight showings et cetera.
