ABSTRACT
John Miller, a mortician and American national, arrives in China during the Second Sino-Japanese War to assist in the preparation of a Catholic priest for burial. Caught up in the middle of Japan's brutal Rape of Nanking, John finds himself forced to act as the protector of a group of female convent students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel, working to save the lives of a number of vulnerable individuals seeking refuge from the chaos and carnage as it draws closer to their hideout.
