A council of French astronomers gather to debate travel to the moon; they (and their showgirls!) end the meeting in mutual agreement to fire themselves encased in a bullet-shaped projectile shot from an an enormous cannon. Once on the moon they encounter and are captured by unfriendly Selenites, barely escaping to return downward back to Earth. Most celebrated film by cinematic pioneer Georges Méliès, utilizing elaborate sets, stop-motion, and complex special effects. Astonishing for 1902. Also available is a hand-color print rediscovered in 1993 and restored.
