The Rains Came (8-Sep-1939)

Director: Clarence Brown

Writers: Philip Dunne; Julien Josephson

From novel: The Rains Came by Louis Bromfield

Music by: Alfred Newman

Keywords: Drama, India

Myrna Loy visits Ranchipur with her husband, catches up with a former lover and pursues an Indian doctor. Also present is Tom Ransome, dating an 18-year-old daughter of missionaries, and the Maharaja and his wife. Their sexual parlor games are interrupted by the simultaneous arrival of monsoon season and a devastating earthquake. Exotic melodrama received the first Oscar for Special Effects, and nominations for 5 other Oscars including Best Cinematography. This was 1939, an enormous year for Hollywood, or it would likely have captured more.
