A pet terrier helps a shy young boy come into his own in early-1940s Mississippi.

Willie Morris, an aloof, awkward young boy in early-1940s Yazoo City, Mississippi, struggles to make friends at school and around town on account of his crippling shyness. His parents give him a terrier puppy for his ninth birthday; christened Skip, the precocious dog serves as an inspiration for Willie and all of Yazoo City as his companionship helps to push him forth into adulthood.
