Director: Edward Zwick

Writers: Marshall Herskovitz; John Logan; Edward Zwick

Keywords: Drama, Japan

Historical drama tells the tale of an embattled American military advisor's embrace of samurai culture after he is captured in battle.

Nathan Algren, a once-proud U.S. Army captain driven into alcohol-fueled disillusionment following his participation in a military-sanctioned ethnic cleansing of Native Americans, reluctantly agrees to an offer tendered by his former commanding officer to train Imperial Japanese Army men against an impending samurai rebellion. Eager to take the job for the money involved despite his lingering resentment towards his old boss, Algren ships off to Japan, soon experiencing a crisis of conscience pushing him towards assimilation into samurai culture after he is captured following a battle.
