Jon Voight is Bud Kilmer, a win-at-any-cost head football coach at West Canaan High School, but his starting quarterback has been seriously injured. The backup quarterback is Jonathon Moxon, played by James Van Der Beek, who has until this point not given football the seriousness required in a small Texas town. Clichéd sports melodrama is one of the better MTV films. Compare Friday Night Lights (2004), adapted from H. G. Bissinger's 1990 novel.
