A young Maori woman aspires to buck generations of tradition to become her New Zealand tribe's first female chief.

Pai is an eleven-year old Maori girl in New Zealand's Whangara tribe who harbors a notion that she is destined to carry on the torch of their fabled common ancestor, Paikea, by becoming their next chief. Tradition does not agree with young Pai's belief, as it dictates that every chief must be a man in keeping with their patriarchal structure. Whale Rider follows the precocious and determined Pai as she strives to convince grandfather Koro to buck age-old tradition and anoint her as their next leader.
