The Host tells the story of a future in which the human race has been co-opted by psychic parasites from another realm called "Souls", benevolent beings that send a 'Seeker' from their ranks to implant a "Soul" known as 'Wanderer' in teenaged girl Melanie Stryder and aim to send her out to find and ultimately assimilate a straggling pocket of unaffected humans. Stryder, as it turns out, happens to be a resilient human spirit who resists the implanting of a "Soul" in her brain, and sets out on a majestic quest to bring humanity back to something resembling what it was in its pre-parasitic days.
