A mentally retarded man, imprisoned by his mother in a small dingy apartment for decades and abused by her as a sexual object, takes advantage of a lapse in her routine to escape to the outside world. His inexperience is both a tremendous handicap and his greatest advantage. The first portion of this film is a dark painful horror and may lose some viewers, but persistence will be richly rewarded. Won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
