Centered around modern-day married couple Cindy and Dean, Blue Valentine uses a cross-cutting series of flashbacks to explain how they came to be together, following their chance meeting as two young adults in the Northeast and subsequent snap decision to get married after Cindy announces she is pregnant. After being regaled with the story of how they came into existence, viewers are treated to a scene in the present day, where the couple are grappling with the prospect of a divorce.
