ABSTRACT
Tatiana, a pregnant teenager of Russian extraction, dies in a London hospital as her baby is successfully delivered. Shortly thereafter, British-Russian midwife Anna Khitrova discovers a Russian-language diary on her person, containing clues as to her identity and possible family back home; a subsequent effort by the idealistic Anna to locate a home for the orphan child leads to great peril, as a mystery forms ultimately pointing to a drug-fueled rape going up to the highest orders of the Russian mob.
