Ray and Alice Brock form a commune and start a restaurant; Arlo Guthrie tries to avoid the draft by attending college, and is later arrested for littering; one of the communards, Shelly, has drug issues. Light on plot, the film still retains interest and more so than other productions of its period serves as an insightful time capsule from the late 1960s. Inspired by events from Guthrie's song of the same title. Arthur Penn received an Oscar nomination for Best Director.
