The government "SCOOP" satellite launched to locate microorganisms in outer space crashes near the town of Piedmont, New Mexico; whatever the satellite brought back quickly kills nearly all the residents of Piedmont. Samples of the contaminant are brought back to the secret "Wildfire Lab" in the Nevada desert for research by a team of four scientists, but it is far from clear that Andromeda will allow itself to be contained. Received Oscar nominations for Best Set Decoration and Best Editing. Received also a Hugo nomination for Best Dramatic Presentation.
