Elderly Japanese couple Shukishi and Tomi journey from their fishing village to visit their adult son and daughter in Tokyo, but find that while their children love them, their modern lives are too busy; only their widowed daughter-in-law truly makes them feel welcome. Tomi falls dangerously ill on their return trip. Widely admired masterpiece, quite outside any standard formula.
