ABSTRACT
10th-century China's Tang Dynasty serves as the backdrop for this expansive, indulgent period piece, telling the tale of an Emperor obsessed with consolidating control over his domain, an illicit relationship between the Empress and stepson Crown Prince Wan, and Wan's dreams of leaving his royal existence behind to make a life with his secret lover. A chaotic series of events transpire on the eve of the Chong Yang Festival, shattering bonds in the royal family as the Imperial Palace is ultimately soaked with blood.
