Whoopi Goldberg is Delores Van Cartier, a marginally successful lounge singer whose boyfriend has engineered a mob hit. Police place her in the Witness Protection Program at a convent, where she joins the choir and turns into a singing powerhouse. This fish-out-of-water comedy provides the perfect venue for Goldberg to shine. Spawned a lesser sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993).
