ABSTRACT East German national Gerd Weisler makes his trade as an agent of the Stasi, his country's secret police, towards the end of the Cold War in 1984. Charged with investigating the goings-on of individuals deemed subversive or otherwise threatening to the continued operations of the state, Gerd peers into the life of celebrated yet outspoken East German writer Georg Dreyman and his lover at the urging of his superiors, soon growing obsessed with his unwitting subjects as he begins to learn disquieting truths behind the motives for his current assignment.
