She is treated badly and harbors a shameful secret, but finds apparent happiness when she marries a missionary. Probably the best adaptation of Hardy's tragic novel. Won Oscars for Best Cinematography, Best Set Decoration, and Best Costume Design; received additional nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score.
