ABSTRACT
Coleman Silk, once a well-respected New England professor who saw his life come crashing down when racist remarks made during a class forced his resignation, approaches colleague Nathan Zuckerman with a proposal for a book about the scandal. Their collaboration is abruptly interrupted by Coleman's affair with younger uneducated janitor Faunia Farley, a tryst threatening to blow the lid off of a strange secret buried deep in his past.
