Beneath the Paris Opera building lurks a disfigured man, roaming unmapped catacombs and forgotten chambers. He covets understudy Christine Daae, engineering her career success with nefarious means. Lon Chaney shines in this otherwise overwrought silent. The first version of the film was reshot after witnessing audience reaction. A second version underwent heavy editing after it too did not sit well with audiences. Many versions and edits exist, the best deriving from a 1950s negative at Eastman House. Entered 1998 into the National Film Registry.
