ABSTRACT
Virgil Oldman, an aging director of a European auction house noted for his somewhat offbeat mannerisms, is placed in the employ of reclusive heiress Claire Ibbetson and instructed to auction off her family's vaunted collection of art and antiques. Virgil's business relationship with the heiress, who continually refuses to meet in person, soon grows into a strange obsession as it plays out alongside a scam perpetrated by friend and business partner Billy Whistler to help him acquire a cache of highly valuable paintings.
