One of the palace Ladies-in-Waiting, Lady Kesa, pretends to be the queen to foil an attempt to capture the true queen. She is rescued by Sir Moritoh, who as reward asks for her hand in marriage. But she is married to Wataru; Moritoh will not take "no" for an answer. The first Japanese feature to be shown in the United States after their defeat in WWII. Won Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design. Won the Grand Prix at Cannes.
