ABSTRACT
Dido Elizabeth Belle is the illegitimate mixed-race child of a British Royal Navy admiral, a young woman whose social standing is impacted by her race in a fractured colonial-era Commonwealth society. Belle follows our titular protagonist, raised in the care of an aristocratic great-uncle, as her burgeoning romance with a vicar's progressive son plays a pivotal role in compelling Lord Mansfield to end slavery in England in his capacity as Lord Chief Justice.
