Director: Lars von Trier Writer: Lars von Trier Keywords: Drama, Blindness A naive Eastern European woman moves to America after developing a false impression of the country from Hollywood films.
ABSTRACT Czechoslovakian native Selma Jeskova is an American immigrant working in a factory, suffering from a degenerative disease leading to blindness and taken by a naive worldview formed from a steady diet of whimsical Hollywood films -- The Sound of Music paramount among them -- playing to her naturally escapist mindset. Troubled neighbor Bill Houston accuses poor Selma of stealing her savings one unfortunate day, setting the stage for a sad confrontation in the pitiable life of a woman attempting to set aside just enough cash for a crucial eye surgery for her similarly-afflicted son.
