ABSTRACT Nader and Simin, a Tehran couple who have been married for fourteen years and are teetering on the brink of divorce, have an 11-year old daughter together with a promising future ahead of her. Simin disagrees with the prevailing political situation in their native country and desires to move their child to a more liberalized society; Nader believes staying in Iran to look after his Alzheimer's-afflicted father to be more important. When a family court rejects Simin's request for a divorce, the real drama begins, as a newly-separated couple must cope with the respective challenges of raising a daughter and looking after an elder by themselves. Won an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
