ABSTRACT Villagers in 19th-century North India face oppression in various forms, suffocated by an ungodly drought on one end and an exorbitant land tax -- or lagaan -- levied by ruling British colonists on the other. The villagers' pleas for a more reasonable lagaan are met with a deal from British captain Andrew Russell: An India vs. Great Britain cricket match, with the winner getting their way in the lagaan dispute. Now, young villager Bhuvan must raise a competitive cricket team in a country with zero knowledge of the alien sport and prepare them for an epic showdown against their well-heeled rulers.
