On the school's seal, the dates "1874/1906" appear. An earlier institution was founded 1874 as Central University. EKU was founded by the state legislature in 1906 as Eastern Kentucky State Normal School, it became Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College in 1922, Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College in 1930, Eastern Kentucky State College in 1948, and Eastern Kentucky University in 1966.
