For-profit wiki venture, founded in 2004 as "Wikicities" by Jimbo Wales and Angela Beesley. The confusing name was changed in 2005. The site hosts custom wikis for clients, such as "Wookieepedia", a resource for Star Wars fans. Wikia has received rounds of funding: $4M from Bessemer Venture Partners and Omidyar Network plus several other investors, and a second round of an undisclosed amount from Amazon. In 2006 Wikia inexplicably announced that it would buy ArmchairGM, a wiki-run sports site with low traffic, for $2M.
