AOL

COMPANY

America Online. At one time the nation's largest ISP, with a userbase of 30M. Early acquisitions include CompuServe (1997), Mirabilis (maker of ICQ, 1998), Netscape (1998), Moviefone (1999), Nullsoft (maker of WinAmp, 1999), and MapQuest (1999). Merged with Time Warner in 2001, forming AOL Time Warner and keeping that name for a year.

Suffering a precipitous decline in its membership, AOL was spun off in 2009; it is now primarily an online publishing company. Recent acquisitions include Bebo (2008), TechCrunch (2010), and The Huffington Post (2011).
