Founded 1980 by Charles W. Ergen, his wife Cantey M. Ergen and James DeFranco, as a C-band satellite dish retailer in Colorado. Its digital satellite cable business, Dish Network, was launched in 1996. In 2007, Dish Network's set-top box and satellite services business was spun off as Echostar. In 2011, Echostar announced its pending purchase of Hughes Electronics for $1.35B.
