Bookstore chain, founded 1873 by Charles Montgomery Barnes, and merged with Noble & Noble in 1917 to become Barnes & Noble.

In an unusual move, B&N spun off its website as a separate company in 1998, selling half interest to Bertelsmann, and another chunk of it in a 1999 public IPO. The parent company reacquired Bertelsmann's interest in 2003 and the remainder in 2004.
