Diversified conglomerate, founded originally as a holding company for Swift & Company, meat packers. Esmark is now largely forgotten. It acquired Norton Simon in 1983 for $1.1B, including Avis Rent-a-Car. Other assets that Esmark owned were Playtex, Tropicana, Hunt-Wesson Foods and the Chicago White Sox. Esmark was acquired in 1984 by Beatrice Foods for $2.7B. Beatrice itself was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts two years later.
