Backbone internet provider, founded in 1996 by Sherman Tuan and Dave Rand. It was acquired by Metromedia Fiber Network for $1.5B in 1999, an entity controlled by John Kluge, Chairman of Metromedia. MFN filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after missing a payment to Nortel in 2002. It emerged in 2003 as AboveNet.
