Investment banking and brokerage, founded in 1923. Became a public company on 29 October 1985. $30B under management in 2007. After posting its first loss at the end of 2007, Bear Stearns suffered an astounding liquidity crisis in March 2008. The Federal Reserve backed the company's acquisition by JP Morgan Chase for the price of $2 a share (later raised to $10 a share).
