The flight of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, 622 AD (21 June to 2 July). Muhammad and his followers undertook the journey to Yathrib, in order to escape an assassination plot. The city was renamed Madinat un-Nabi, rendered in English as Medina.

The year of Hegira is used as the basis for the Islamic calendar.
