It was previously believed that Hu remained on the Politburo Standing Committee beyond his 1987 ouster from the office of General Secretary, but a report in Yazhou Zhoukan indicates that he may have been ousted from there as well. After Hu's death in 1989 (one of the triggers of the Tiananmen Square riots) many occurrences of his name were removed from text and history books. Recent indications are that Hu is undergoing somewhat of a rehabilitation.
