[1] Michelangelo Signorile, Queer in America (2003), describing Gunderson's forcible outing: "[Michael] Petrelis kicked off his campaign when he approached Gunderson in an Alexandria, Virginia gay bar that the Congressman frequented (along with Badlands in DC). Petrelis first urged Gunderson to come out and support gay rights. According to The Washington Times, Gunderson replied, 'I am out. I'm in this bar, aren't I?' and then brushed Petrelis off. The activist grew angry, threw a drink in Gunderson's face, and called the police on himself. He pushed the story in the press until the papers back in Milwaukee finally printed it."
