Edward really uses a technique called "cold reading", in which he seems to communicate with the dead by asking vague or leading questions. Edward was lampooned on South Park, in the episode "The Biggest Douche in the Universe" (ep. 615), and debunked on the very first episode of Penn and Teller's Bullshit!, "Talking to the Dead".
