First black player for the Chicago Cubs, 1953 until 1971. Batted .274 over his career, with 2,583 hits, 512 homers and 1,636 RBI. In addition to his play, his optimistic spirit made him enormously popular with Cubs fans, even decades after retiring from the game. His statue stands outside Wrigley Field.
