Bridget Fonda is the niece of Jane Fonda, daughter of Peter Fonda, and granddaughter of Henry Fonda. Her godfather is Larry Hagman. There is a brief glimpse of four-year-old Fonda in her father's Easy Rider, but she resisted going into acting until high school, when she appeared in a school play and had a tiny part in an abysmal Ryan O'Neal comedy called Partners. She studied drama for four years at New York University, and has said she felt very uncomfortable on stage until her junior year. Her first substantial film role was in 1987's opera anthology Aria, wherein she had no dialogue but quickly got naked. She turned down the role of Ally McBeal that made fellow waif Calista Flockhart a star.

In early 2003, Fonda suffered head and neck injuries when she drove her Jaguar over an embankment and off the Pacific Coast Highway. Several months later, she married former Oingo Boingo frontman Danny Elfman, and since then she has apparently retired from show business.
