Worked for Lockheed until 1987, then ventured into the Antivirus business as one of its first hucksters. This was at a time when viruses were not a problem, so the problem had to be created -- and at least one virus, Virus-B, was written with McAfee money. After taking McAfee Inc. public in 1992 (now owned by Network Associates, or NAI), John McAfee founded a new company, Tribal Voice, and released a social networking/chat product called PowWow. McAfee sold out of Tribal Voice at some point, and it has since folded. For a time he was practicing and teaching yoga in Arizona, but he has since moved to Belize where he lives his own eccentric Heart of Darkness, complete with henchmen. Presently, McAfee is wanted by the Belize authorities as a "Person of Interest" regarding the murder of Gregory Faull, an American expat. Fearing officials in Belize, he escaped to Guatemala, who subsequently deported him to the United States. His story of escape is less than believable, perhaps more appropriate in a made-for-TV movie[2].

[1] Most newspaper sources give 1945 as his year of birth. Some book sources give 1946. General agreement is that he was born in the month of September during one of these years, somewhere in England. The exact day (September 18th) is from McAfee's Facebook page, which we have verified to be genuine.
